My new bed

Now that we've rolled over to March, I'm starting to think about Spring and thinking about Spring is causing me to think about gardening.  Since I've become an adult and a home-owner I have really gotten into growing things, particularly edible things.  I am really starting to love that I can plant things one year and continue to reap the benefits in future years, so I have invested in a lot of fruit plants.  Last year I put in a BUNCH of different berries and a couple stone fruit trees.

What I am really excited about this year, though, is this: my new asparagus bed.  I planted ten Jersey Knight asparagus crowns in a dedicated bed that was newly built for me (thanks, Honey!) and cannot WAIT for next year when I can harvest.  I am supposed to be able to harvest up to six weeks and the crowns should last 10-20 years.  That's a LOT of asparagus.  Yum.

So why does this matter to you?  Once the sun comes back you will find yourself looking at a fresh crop of berry and stone fruit recipes.  Like sour cherry turnovers, raspberry sorbet, strawberry shortcake and blueberry-balsamic sauce.  I'm getting hungry, are you?

Where are you on the gardening continuum?  Do you keep it simple with an upside-down hanging tomato grower on your patio or do you go all out and put in a yarden (that's when you remove your sod and plant a home farm in your yard)?

  1. I love asparagus - although I'm not sure I'm clever enough to raise it on my own ;) My mom was always a terrific gardener and loved to plant all kinds of crops, but I must admit I HATED working in the garden and even as a grown up I avoid gardening and yard work at all costs ;)

  2. Did I invent the word Yarden, or do other people use that term!? :) Funny!
you know me, I've got 4 Yarden patches!!
We've got kale, chard, radish, rhubarb, garlic, and raspberries already sprouting.
